On 18 March, Sotheby’s will be offering a selection of works spanning six hundred years of printmaking, from Old Master, Modern to Pop and Contemporary prints and multiples. The Old Master Prints section is led by Rembrandt’s experimental Sheet of Studies, two extremely rare-to-market Philips Koninck landscapes, along with a first edition of Goya’s complete Los Caprichos.

Highlights of our Modern section are two important works by Edvard Munch, Melancholy III and The Sick Child I, each printed in a striking combination of colours, which invites an intense emotional response. In addition to a strong selection of Picasso’s linoleum cuts from the late 1950s to the early 1960s, we are pleased to offer Picasso’s earliest printed project, the complete Suite des Saltimbanques, conceived in 1904-05 and printed in 1913 by Ambroise Vollard. Finally, the auction includes a copy of Henri Matisse’s late-life meditation on art, the vibrantly coloured and beloved artist’s book Jazz.

Leading the Pop and Contemporary sections are a broad and varied selection of Andy Warhol’s graphic work, ranging from his early iconic subjects such as Mao and Liz to his late After Munch screenprints. An exceptionally fresh, complete set of ten Warhol Mao prints is the highlight of this section. In addition, Warhol’s Lenin, Rebel Without a Cause (James Dean) from the Ads portfolio, and three unique impressions of Warhol’s late After Munch series: Eva Mudocci, Madonna and Self-Portrait With Skeleton’s Arm, and The Scream also feature strongly in this part of the auction.
